08 March 2010 - Time to celebrate our cultural diversity this Harmony Day
Federal Member for Werriwa, Chris Hayes MP is encouraging all locals to celebrate the cohesive and inclusive nature of our nation and promote the benefits of cultural diversity this Harmony Day which falls on Sunday March 21st 2010.
Mr Hayes said “Harmony Day began in 1999 and enjoys wide community support and provides opportunities for people to come together and celebrate. Importantly it is an opportunity to address issues of cultural, racial and religious intolerance through community activities that break down barriers and bring about respect”.
The continuing message of Harmony Day is ‘Everyone Belongs’. It's about community participation, inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone.
The 2010 theme is ‘Express Yourself’. This gives you the opportunity to share with others the importance of diversity in your workplace, school and community through action, performance, fashion and food.
“There is no limit to the range of activities that can be held for Harmony Day and I encourage schools, community groups, local government and businesses to get involved and actively support this day of celebration” said Mr Hayes.
“Ideas for participation, free promotional products and details of local community events and activities are at www.harmony.gov.au”.
Another way to participate is through the ‘A Taste of Harmony’ initiative which encourages all workplaces to celebrate the cultural diversity of their staff through food. More information on this initiative can be found at www.tasteofharmony.org.au.
“Seeing such a mixture of vibrancy, colour and diversity is such that our community should be proud and is a great reminder of what Harmony Day is all about” said Mr Hayes.
